The next morning, Retz searches through the rubble of the destroyed house with Gon and Killua to find her puppet, which managed to stay in one piece thanks to being hidden away in a protective box. Gon and Killua tell Retz to go somewhere safer while they deal with Uvogin, and she heeds their advice and runs off. Gon carries Retz as the trio makes their escape from their shared room. While the trio rests for the night, a puppet of Uvogin attacks the house they are in, startling Retz from her slumber. Killua seems to be aware of Retz's true nature after her explanation, but says nothing about it to Gon. She claims that getting the eyes perfect can actually give the puppet a soul. Killua remarks that her puppet has beautiful eyes, which prompts Retz to tell them that the eyes are the hardest thing on a puppet to make, but can give the puppet the most life. She also tells the boys about her brother, Omokage, who is a puppeteer, and her inspiration for wanting to become one herself. She holds her hand-made puppet close to her chest, calling it her best friend. She remarks how close Killua and Gon seem to be, and tells them she is jealous of their friendship. Over a meal at a restaurant, Retz explains that she wasn't trying to trick them, but that she was merely trying to protect herself, as she claims it's dangerous for girls to travel on their own like she is, and that she often pretends to be a boy for this reason. She falls back, and while Gon goes to her aid, Killua looks at his hand and hesitantly asks Retz if she is a girl. In a burst of anger, Killua yells back at Retz and pushes her to the ground by forcing his hand against her chest. He remarks that she seems shady and is probably just a petty thief, which angers Retz and causes her to yell at him, demanding an apology. Killua is instantly jealous of the quick bond that Gon and Retz have already formed. Gon introduces Retz as his friend to Killua, under the assumption that Retz is a boy. The moment passes, and Gon pulls out his scrawled picture to ask Retz if she can help him locate the place Kurapika saw in his vision.īy nightfall, Retz and Gon are talking in the streets of town when Killua returns looking for Gon. The comment prompts Retz to look wistful, but she thanks Gon nonetheless, and he notices something strange happen in her eyes. Gon remarks how awesome Retz's show was and how life-like her puppet seemed. Once the two are alone, Retz thanks Gon for his help and introduces herself as a puppeteer. Retz runs to her rescue and shields her with her body, before Gon runs to their aid. Retz first appears in Hunter × Hunter: Phantom Rouge while busking with her puppet in a small town in the Totoria District, where her performance has attracted a large crowd of people who are in awe of her puppetry skills, including Gon.Īfter the performance, a young girl goes to give Retz a few coins, but stumbles while running away, prompting a horse-drawn cart to lose control and almost crush the young girl. ![]() Note: Events occurring in the Hunter × Hunter: Phantom Rouge movie do not constitute canon material. Despite being a living puppet, she had developed her own feelings and intentions through her interactions with Gon and Killua, and grew to be genuinely fond of them. She constantly wondered what "true life" really was. She was also afraid of her brother, who had revived her as a manipulable doll that he could control if he needed to. Retz claimed to be jealous of Gon and Killua’s relationship. She was often a very sweet and happy girl, although was often seen as argumentative and determined when dealing with Killua. Retz was a young puppeteer who disguised herself as a boy by dressing in typical boys' clothes and hiding her long hair under a hat. She also wore black stockings and gray shoes. ![]() She also wore light-blue overalls, blue gloves, and yellow sneakers. Later in the movie, Retz wore a red and black Gothic- lolita dress and a red ribbon on her head. When she was disguised as a boy, her hair seemed significantly shorter, hidden under a light-blue skull cap. For all of Hunter × Hunter: Phantom Rouge, the eyes she had were actually her brother's, but her original disembodied eyes are seen in a flashback and shared the same color as her brother's.
